About

Board-Level NHS Experience. Independent Director-Level Perspective.

An NHS career that began at the frontline in the late 1990s and now spans more than ten years at senior and director level across integrated care, provider and commissioning organisations — leading strategy, transformation and system-facing delivery in one of the most complex regulated environments in the world.

Having led major strategy, transformation and commissioning portfolios, I bring a rare dual perspective to senior advisory work. Because the first decade of my career was spent inside frontline provider services alongside clinical teams, every strategy, pathway and financial model I design is grounded in the operational reality of delivery — not just board paper logic.

Today, I offer independent hands-on support and strategic counsel to NHS boards and system partners, helping senior leadership teams navigate high-stakes decisions, system-wide redesigns and complex governance challenges.

Track record

A record of senior credibility across the NHS system.

NHS career since the late 1990s

Frontline NHS service from the late 1990s, with more than ten years at senior and director level across provider, commissioning and integrated care organisations.

Grounded in frontline services

Early career spanning mental health, learning disability and primary care clinic services — direct operational understanding of how NHS care is actually delivered.

Senior leadership

Accountability for strategy, transformation portfolios and operational performance at scale.

Delegated primary care commissioning

Director-level oversight of delegated primary care commissioning, with governance of approximately 300 primary care providers across three integrated care systems. Over 100 Primary Care Networks supported.

Board governance & assurance

Board-level leadership of primary care governance, serving as Founding Director of a primary care legal entity, Partner Member of an ICB Board of Partners, Chair of a Primary Care Contracts Board and Deputy Chair of a Primary Care Commissioning Board. Accountable for the scrutiny and assurance of commissioning strategy, contractual performance and investment decisions within statutory frameworks.

Architect of Integrated Community Teams

Early architect of Integrated Community Teams within a large integrated care system, designing neighbourhood-aligned teams around population health and same-day care demand.

Neighbourhood & urgent care alignment

Experience aligning neighbourhood operating models to urgent care and discharge reform — bridging commissioning intent with operational delivery.

Financial accountability

Stewardship of significant NHS budgets, with a track record of value realisation, CIP delivery and investment reallocation.

Governance & regulatory fluency

Comfort operating within CQC, NHS England and statutory board assurance frameworks.

Independent, selective, ethical

Advisory offered on a selective basis, with clear conflict governance and outside any substantive NHS remit.

Positioning

Selective. Ethical. Independent.

Engagements are accepted on a considered basis, where independent senior perspective can materially strengthen the decisions in front of a board.

All work is undertaken outside substantive NHS employment, with transparent conflict management and a clear engagement scope agreed in writing at the outset.

Evidence of delivery

Programmes taken from case for change to mobilisation.

Anonymised examples — discharge redesign, an intermediate care case for change, the design of Integrated Community Teams and a primary care workforce integration programme — are set out in full, with context, action and result, on the Relevant Experience page.
